"Dubs In The Key Of Life"
(Glitterhouse/Indigo)Der Name Sub Oslo mag ein wenig verwirren, kommen die Bandmitglieder doch aus Denton, Texas. Auf ihrem Debüt "Dubs In The Key Of Life" belegen sie überzeugend, dass es auch in der texanischen Provinz gelingt, tolle Dub-Tunes zu produzieren. Dabei ist ihr Dub nur noch rudimentär mit dem klassischen, jamaikanischen Vorbild verwandt, ohne dabei jedoch die Wurzeln aus den Ohren zu verlieren. Sehr reduziert weben die 6 meist extralangen Titel ("Stratospheric Penetration" etwa mit 10:59 min) einen hypnotischen, transzendenten Sound, der in seiner düsteren Tiefe schon fast magisch wirkt.
Slowmotion-Dub der Extraklasse, sorgfältig und ohne zu viel Effekt-Schnickschnack dargeboten! Insofern passt sich das Album von Sub Oslo nahtlos in das Glitterhouse-Programm ein (man denke da z.B. an die sphärisch-minimalistischen Klänge von Savoy Grand und Dakota Suite!). "Sub Oslo's music is a soul-thumping riddim and enchanting cosmic brew that moves your feet off the ground and your head into the clouds", beschrieb der Austin Chronicle sehr treffend den Sound der Band. "LWI" mag man da denken: Listening While Intoxicatet. Egal wie, ideal zum Abheben!
The name Sub Oslo might seem slightly confusing since the members of the band all come from Denton, Texas. Their debut, “Dubs In The Key Of Life”, is eloquent proof of the fact that you can create great dub tunes in the wilds of Texas.
Their dub retains only rudimentary ties with the traditional Jamaican style, without, however, being a complete departure from the rootsy mould. The six ultra-reduced, super-long songs (“Stratospheric Penetration“ is a staggering 10:59 minutes) weave a hypnotic, transcendental sound with a dark depth that has an almost magical effect.
Slow-motion dub in a class of its own, carefully rendered with a minimum of those special effects that can get so irksome after a while. The Sub Oslos’ album sits seamlessly in the Glitterhouse repertoire (soulmates with, for example, the spherical, minimist sounds of Savoy Grand and Dakota Suite!). "Sub Oslo’s music is a soul-thumping riddim and enchanting cosmic brew that moves your feet off the ground and your head into the clouds“, is how the Austin Chronicle fittingly described the band’s sound. This album cries out for “LWI“: Listening While Intoxicated. However you choose to listen to it - it’s music to take off to!
