“Sing A Song”

The Best Of Island Reggae”).

Keine Cover sondern krispe Neuerscheinungen sind übrigens auch “I Feel You” und “Gas At The Station”.

“Only Love Can Break Your Heart” zum Beispiel erinnert – neben dem Original von Neil Young – in der Interpretation stark an “Everything I Own”, so dass man eigentlich direkt lauthals mitsingen möchte.

English version:

Many of us have spent Christmas among family and friends who have fulfilled musical wishes expressed in advance, thus causing great joy but little wonder. Some might have enjoyed the questionable pleasure of receiving presents like compilations of the assumed favourite music (in my case often something like “The Best Of Island Reggae”). A kind gesture, but doomed to collect dust in the shelves.

So much the better if a musical recommendation which came unasked turns out to be a positive surprise, a true treasure even: that’s exactly what happened in the beginning of December, when a certain Bruno “Patchworks” Hovart contacted us to call our attention to his freshly released album “Sing A Song” (Stix Records). Into producing Disco, Funk, Soul and Jazz since the mid-nineties, the virtuoso took on the alias Taggy Matcher in 2007 to dedicate himself to Reggae-Remixes as well. After a few successful singles the time was ripe for a concentrated dose of feel-good-music: 10 tracks (11 in case you go for the MP3-version) await the inclined listener!

After only a few notes it becomes clear that these songs are not rapidly fabricated cover-versions, but affectionately arranged pearls of musical history. Recorded anew, recent hits such as Rihanna’s “No Love Allowed” or “Lonely Boy” and “Tighten Up” by the The Black Keys shine in fresh glory. Likewise, older and partially quite unknown gems like “Sugar Man” by Rodriguez, Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid” (both 1970) or “The Partisan” by Leonard Cohen (1969) are skilfully wrested from oblivion. A big part of the magic spread is due to the vocals: next to Mr Day and John Milk, who have sided with the master of sound in previous productions, Taggy Matcher presents the French singer Nicolas Nourrit (a.k.a. Birdy Nixon) as well as the elf-like LMK, a discovery from Lyon who is a wonderful choice for the very own “My Man”. No covers but crisp new releases are also “Gas At The Station” and “I Feel You”, by the way.

Although the songs hail from stylistically very different sources, they have in common their immediate impact on the hearer, thus reflecting the loving eye of detail discernible from A to Z. Maybe it’s an impression only I get, but the interaction of a) the recognition of these “old friends” and b) the feeling of discovering something completely new create a tingling sensation in diverse audiophile receptor cells. “Only Love Can Break Your Heart”, for example, reminds me – besides the original of Neil Young – in its interpretation strongly of “Everything I Own”, so that you feel like singing along full-throated. Maybe that’s the intention expressed in the title of the album? In any case, “Sing A Song” is a very advisable way of welcoming the new year. And a present you can make yourself without remorse, even after Yule.
