Lengualerta: Zunge in Alarmbereitschaft

ENGLISH VERSION:
Lengualerta: tongue on red alert
The first of May is not only the international Labour Day and is as such celebrated throughout Europe (in Lübeck for example with an alternative May Party at a trailer park called Walli), it is also the birthday of Mexican singer Lengualerta. Now, actually there is no connection between these two events, but this year, it has been established. On the “Wake The Town / Reggae Not Dead”-Tour, which currenty brings Lengualerta and iLLBiLLY HiTEC (as well as visual artist Gran Om and singer Longfingah) across Germany and beyond, the bearded artist stopped at the big “Mayflower”-stage of the Walli to regale us with his revolutionary song lore and at the same time celebrate his birthday. And what a celebration this was! Who ever took part in the colourful hustle and bustle the Walli turns into on the first of May knows about the special ambience: apart from bonfire, crafts corner, a slackline and a muscle-driven merry-go-round fort he kids, many NGOs present themselves with food, information or activities (Kids Kenia for instance always organise the “Reggae-Corner”, where you can sip real Kenyan Chai and eat Mandazi to relaxed sounds from the bass-tower). Numerous live-acts further enrich the Mini-Festival and make people dance all night on a total of three stages.
It was Lengualerta’s turn just before sunset, and he spellbound the listeners with his unusually clear voice and the strong messages he’s bringing across. It doesn’t really play a big role here that many of his lyrics were Spanish – slogans like “Libertad!” or “Alerta!” are understood same way. Especially the haunting hymn “For Those” or the highly topical “No Borders” – both sung in Englisch – allowed for comprehensive listening, so that at the end of his 45-minutes show, Lengualerta was engulfed not only in roaring applause but also big respect. That’s a man who really moves something with his art! He moved the massive again later at said Reggae-Corner, where he picked up the mike once more until the place was closed at midnight.
