"Roots Of Dub Funk 2"

Mitte der 90er Jahre als NeoDub frischen Wind in die Reggaeszene brachte und auch anderen Bereichen des Genres zu einen wahren Veröffentlichungsflut verhalf. Das ist länger her und mittlerweile hat sich das, was man unter dem Begriff Dub subsumiert in verschiedene Bereiche hinein entwickelt und ist dadurch letztendlich schwer fassbar geworden - man denke hier z.B. an die stilistische Bandbreite der King Size Dub-Reihe von Echo Beach. "Roots Of Dub Funk 2" von Tanty Records aus Middlesex (UK) widmet sich Tracks und Projekten, die unverkennbar ihre Inspiration aus den Tagen ziehen, als viele NeoDub-Produktionen den typisch britischen Sound hatten. Das mag angesichts der Internationalität der versammelten Künstler (neben England u.a. aus den USA, Australien, Frankreich, Holland und der Schweiz) etwas komisch klingen.
Alle Dubs präsentieren sich sehr reduziert und kommen fast ausschließlich mit keinen oder sehr wenigen Vocals aus. Ausnahmen, wie z.B. der ausgezeichnete "Country Living Dub" von Dub Creator feat. RAS Milo, gibt es wenige. Es dominieren instrumental eingespielte Titel bei denen, wie könnte es anders sein, der Bass sowie etliche Effekte dominieren. Hervorzuheben ist ebenfalls Munky Lee mit dem "Try Harder Dub", bei dem eine Melodica zum Einsatz kommt.
Freudig überrascht war ich, einem neuen Mix von einem der schönsten NeoDub-Titel überhaupt zu begegnen. Die Veteranen von Alpha & Omega haben sich erneut "Under Contention" feat. Daddy Teacha angenommen (ursprünglich u.a. auf Irie in Roots meets Alpha & Omega "The Signs" - Buback zu finden) und zu einem etwas schleppenderen "Dub Under Contention" verarbeitet. Auch schön!
Empfohlen sei ebenfalls die Veröffentlichung "Black City Dread" aus dem Hause Tanty, deren Untertitel auch dieses Album sehr gut und knapp beschreibt: "future flavored stripped down dub"!Yup, NeoDub is still alive and kicking: the dub that brought a breath of fresh air to the reggae scene in the mid-90s and triggered a veritable deluge of releases throughout other areas of the genre. But that's all a few years back now and in the meantime dub - or at least what we refer to as dub - has developed into a whole heap of different directions, making it all that more difficult to actually pin down. Just consider the stylistic bandwidth of the King Size Dub series by Echo Beach. "Roots Of Dub Funk 2" by Tanty Records from Middlesex (UK) features tracks and projects that are audibly inspired by the good old days when many NeoDub productions had that typical British sound, although this may sound slightly paradox in light of the national and cultural diversity of the artists collected here (including the UK, the US, Australia, France, Holland and Switzerland).
All the dubs on this compilation are very reduced, and most get by with no or very little vocals. There are few exceptions to this pattern, one being the excellent "Country Living Dub" by Dub Creator feat. RAS Milo. The majority of the tacks are instrumental numbers in which - surprise, surprise - the bass and a wild multitude of effects dominate. Another outstanding track is Munky Lee with the "Try Harder Dub", which features a melodica.
I was pleasantly surprised to come across a new mix of one of the best NeoDub tracks of all times: veterans Alpha & Omega have again tackled "Under Contention" feat. Daddy Teacha (originally featured on Irie in Roots meets Alpha & Omega "The Signs" on the Buback label) and have this time transformed it into the slightly more laid back "Dub Under Contention". Very nice indeed!
"Black City Dread", also released by Tanty, is another highly recommended album. Look no further than the sub-title to find out what this album is all about: "future flavoured stripped down dub"!
