"I Love"
(BamJimba Productions - 2003) ...including an english version of the review belowBamJimba ist eine sehr ambitionierte und solidarische Angelegenheit. Den Informationen nach handelt es sich um ein Projekt um einen Mann Namens "The Fatman" aus England. Alle Musiker haben sich zusammengefunden, um ein Album aufzunehmen, das in Gedenken an Papa Wade McKinney auf eine Krankheit namens "Sickle Cell Anaemia (S.C.D.)" aufmerksam macht und zudem den Erlös der "Sickle Cell Society" (UK) zur Verfügung stellt. Papa Wade McKinney, ein überzeugter Rasta von den Fari Productions in Nassau, starb 1999 an dieser genetischen Krankheit. Gemeinsam machten sich die Musiker an ein Werk, das von Liebe erzählt und den Namen "I Love" zu recht trägt. Interessant ist dabei ebenfalls das Konzept, denn es wurde der Titel "Your Love Is Gotta Hold On Me" von Dennis Brown (produziert von Joe Gibbs) ausgewählt um die Basis aller 7 Titel zu sein. Dabei entfernen sich die Instrumentals selbstverständlich vom Original um Längen. Dennoch verbindet sie ein zuweilen fast unsichtbares Band. Bemerkenswert ist ebenfalls die Vermengung von ganz verschiedenen musikalischen Einflüssen zu einem weitgehend harmonischen Ganzen. So finden sich neben Reggae und Dub Zutaten von Ambient, Jazz, World Music, Trip Hop, Techno und ein ganz klein wenig Rock (aber wirklich nur ein Hauch). Insgesamt entseht, trotz technoider Ausflüge, ein laid back feeling. Ganz hervorragend gelingen die Titel "Nuestro Amor One", bei dem sich ein jazzy touch mit afrikanischen Sounds unter dem Segel Ambientdub vereint, und allen voran "Love Your Blues". Letztgenannter Titel überzeugt auf weit mehr als 9 Minuten durch einen eklektizistischen Stilmix, der mit schleppendem Dubreggae beginnt und nach 1: 53 in elektronische Gefilde abhebt, den Techno küsst und die Psychedelia hochleben lässt. Das ist ungemein reizvoll! Hervorzuheben ist die Tatsache, dass "I Love" als Gesamtwerk funktioniert - als Konzeptalbum sozusagen. Denn trotz gelegentlich ein wenig unmotivierter Phasen stimmt die Richtung und fügt sich zu einem harmonischen Ganzen zusammen. Hierzu passt ebenfalls das liebevoll gestaltete Cover. Wirklich nett!!! Und dazu noch im Dienste einer guten Sache....
BamJimba is an ambitious and very righteous project. Judging by the information I have, it is a project initiated by a fellow called "The Fatman" who comes from England. All the musicians involved donated their time and talents to record a CD in tribute to Papa Wade McKinney. The album's aim is to raise awareness of Sickle Cell Anaemia (SCD) and all proceeds will be donated to the Sickle Cell Society in the UK. Papa Wade McKinney, a devout Rastafarian involved in Fari Productions in Nassau, died in 1999 of this genetic disorder. The musicians got together to record a CD inspired by love which is rightly entitled "I Love". The concept is equally fascinating: the song "Your Love Is Gotta Hold On Me" by Dennis Brown (produced by Joe Gibbs) was selected as the basis for all seven tracks. Naturally, the instrumentals take exciting, creative liberties with the original, but at the same time they are all linked by an almost invisible band. This album cleverly blends a variety of musical influences to form a truly harmonious whole. Reggae and dub dominate, but inventive use has also been made of ambient, jazz, world music, trip hop, techno and even rock - but only a minute smattering of the latter! Despite technoid experimentation, the result is extremely laid-back. Top tracks are "Nuestro Amor One", which unites a jazzy touch with African sounds to create an ambient dub soundscape, and "Love Your Blues", an eclectic 9-minute style crossover that stars with mellow dub reggae, progresses to electronic around 1:53, has a brief flirt with techno and then culminates in psychedelia: delectable! "I Love" works well as a complete concept - almost a concept album, I suppose. Despite the occasional less-motivated section, the direction is right and the result is harmonious, as is the cover, which has been designed with love. A good album and for a very good cause!
