UP!-Tour NANOOK – Nurturing All Nuances Of One’s Kreativity

IR07

Way up, stay up!

English translation:

Jamaica is not all about Reggae. That the fertile island is a breeding ground for various other art-genres is currently impressively proven by the Kingstonian art-collective Nanook. During the next three months, they will show what’s up artistically in a pan-European tour. The first three members of this UP!-Tour have already arrived in Hamburg and are working feverishly to prepare their first exhibition which will open tonight (Thursday, 16th of July, 6 pm) at the gallery KunSTpauli, Clemens-Schultz-Straße 94.

UP! does not only stand for the planned direction of this exchange (higher, further, better), but is also the acronym for United Purpose. Themed “Together we are strong!”, the Nanooks have put out their feelers, activated contacts, started a Crowdfunding-campaign and raised money with events – successfully, as the presence of the first three artists shows. Matthew McCarthy, Italee and Dan Tho see themselves as self-confident representatives of a young movement that intends to share with the world Jamaica’s true creativity. Far from palm-tree pictures and red-gold-green tinted tourism-memorabilia, the talented hands of the ambitious artists give birth to true works of art – some of them directly in front of the eyes of the visitors! Opportunities to witness these are plenty: starting with Hamburg, the UP!-Tour will be present at the Reggae Jam in Bersenbrück, followed by a stay in Berlin where the Yaam will celebrate an “Upfest” on August 1st and 2nd. From there, they proceed to festivals like Skandalos and Rototom. Way up, stay up!

The Nanook-network founded by Joan Webley incorporates not only visual artists and painters, but also designers, photographers, dancers, cooks und Yoga-teachers. The little community on Burlington Avenue close to Halfway Tree offers a refuge to escape the concrete jungle, at the same time providing a platform for the artist’s work. Exhibitions, fashion shows, live-events or simply an office with a stable internet connection – the young talents find everything they might need, but most of all: support!

Irie Ites will accompany the UP!-Tour and keep you updated – stay tuned!!!
