Macht weiter so!

English version

Some of you may remember the review of the Serendubity Festival 2015 that was full of praises. Therefore I was quite disappointed to hear that there would be no festival in 2016. But that’s not been the whole truth since in April there was already the “Rise Up” at Rosis (another Club in Berlin) and now Serendubity have appeased us with the “Sommerdubwende” mini festival. The event back in April has been quite crowded and yet I had a feeling that pulling enough people to fill the Mensch Meier might be hard. Fortunately, this has been an error of judgement on my side for there were loads of people coming round, at least from my point of view!

The gates already opened in the early afternoon but before you could enter you had to tape the camera on your mobile phone because there’s been a ban on photography – what happens in Mensch Meier, stays in Mensch Meier! Yet there will be no shortage of fond memories because the crew has, yet again, put together an outstanding event. The accompanying cultural program did invite the visitors to take part in the journey and performances like the live animation from Shoxxx Boxxx, that made the people laugh and caused bright faces all around. Some visitors even improvised an astonishing dancing performance at the waterfall of light in the aisle.

But first things first: Alltogehter there have been 4 floors with the secret garden being the first one to be populated in the afternoon. When I arrived, the Bass Kätz were about to start their live looping and live painting performance that’s been quite nice! If anyone knows whether the resulting painting is available, please tell me in the comments! After that, Catitah pulled off a nice roots and steppers set followed by the time-honored Berlin resident Dubfish who presented us with a strong set that made a perfect start for the night that should ensue.

Now the indoor events started and when entering the “Räuberhöhle” from the secret garden, one did stumble right into the live animation from Shoxxx Boxxx that was so cute! With just a camera, many utensils, a bit of cardboard and – as sure as hell – a lot of effort, they presented multiple short stories – brilliant! After that I went straight to the Dub Saray floor where Lion’s Den were already heating up the sound system and because of that I can’t really tell you about the “Räuberhöle” or the “Beat Orakel” but I heard some quite good opinions on the performances of Acid Dub Foundation and Steinregen Dubsystem. You may refer to the timetable for a complete picture 😉

The main acts for the evening have been names that have quite some ring to a dubhead’s ear: Alpha Steppa, Ondubground and Naram have all played heavy sets with Naram coming from a digital, Jahtari-style background, Ondubground with a french and Alpha Steppa with the british version of steppers. And of course, a dub event is only complete with a sound system that brings you crystal clear sound and heavy basslines. Digitron from Croatia did just that! Granted, in the early morning the bass was standing in the room a bit too much, but hey, it’s a dub session!

Apart from the musical pleasures, the main aspect of Serendubity – and the one that draws me to their events time after time – is the inclusionist mindset they preach and practice. Everybody is welcome and greeted warmly. Serendubity is not just only a crew of organisers that create parties that are exchangeable but rather create a community around the topics of music, art, meeting people and exchanging ideas. It’s a deeply felt pleasure to see something like that thrive the way it does. Keep it coming, folks! Your events do spread joy and happiness and, by design, portray an ideal of a society that is very much to my liking!

Addendum: Check the “Preparement” mixtape that has been created for the event. Put it onto your music devices and drift back to reality with this set on your headphones!
